Complex Reference Range:Mixed growth is used to indicate contamination with bowel,vaginal or skin organisms. The presence of epithials cells in large numbers also indicates contamination. If pyuria (>40WBC) is present with mixed growth please repeat if clinically indicated. Delays in transport may affect culture results. Please use clinical information to interpret findings.

Collection Conditions / Other Information:Mid-stream urine (MSU) is the preferred sample type. In females wash the outer genitalia with soap and water and hold the labia apart. For males retract foreskin in uncircumcised patients. Catheter specimens should not be collected unless the patient is pyrexial or systemically unwell. A fresh sample fron the catheter tubing (not the collect bag) should be sent. Nephromstomy urines and supra-pubic aspirates can be sent if appropriate. For pad, ileal conduit, urostomy, cystoscopy and ureteric urines: speak to consultant Microbiologist before sending. For all sample types: if delay in transport to laboratory (up to 4hrs) please store in fridge.
